Yoichi

Yoichi is a town in western Hokkaido famous for being the home of the Nikka Whisky distillery. Despite being as cold for most of the year, Yoichi is a popular destination for drinkers, mostly because you can get really drunk there.

Nikka whisky has recently won several awards for being good, however true drinkers will recognise it for its real value - a way of getting jobbed quickly. The factory comprises some few buildings, most of which are devoted to the storage of the whisky. Following Scottish tradition to the letter - if not the spirit - of the law, you have to pay for the good stuff here. But fork out a couple of thousand yen for the cask-strength whiskies and watch you beard turn white and you wife's eyes squint shut in a trice. All in all a highly recommended day's outing for the whole family, especially if you're not into the more vigorous poo-wrestling clubs of Susukino.
