Saru District

Saru (沙流郡 Saru-gun) is a district in Hidaka Subprefecture. It occupies the wide northwestern end of the the wedge-shaped subprefecture - of which it is by far the largest district - lying between the Pacific Ocean and the Hidaka Mountains. The district is defined by the Saru River and the modern Route 237 which follows the river from the coast northeast to Hidaka Town (proper).

Saru is divided into two townships, Hidaka and Biratori. Originally there was a third township at Monbetsu, but this was merged with Hidaka in 2006, leaving Hidaka (unusually) as two distinct areas lying north and south of Biratori.

In 2007, Saru district had a population of 20,219. The total area is 1,736 km².
