Memuro (芽室町 Memuro-chō) is a town in Kasai District, in the centre of Tokachi Subprefecture, immediately west of the city of Obihiro.

The main JR Nemuro railway line from Sapporo to Obihiro passes through Memuro, with stations at Memuro (芽室) and Taisei (大成).

In 2006, Memuro had a population of 18,973. It has a land area of 514 km².

Contents

History

Memuro was one of the earliest Japanese settlements in Tokachi, claiming a history dating back to 1900. It is the 'home town' of 'gate ball', a simplified form of croquet that has become popular throughout Japan, especially with pensioners.
