Makubetsu

Makubetsu (幕別町 Makubetsu-chō) is a town in Nakagawa District, in the central southern part of Tokachi Subprefecture. It is the home of a form of simplified croquet-style golf called 'park golf'. Invented in 1983, there are ten different courses.

The main JR Nemuro railway line from Obihiro to Kushiro passes through Makubetsu, with stations at Satsunai (札内), Inashibetsu (稲士別) and Makubetsu (幕別).

In 2006, Makubetsu had a population of 27,454. It has a land area of 478 km² mainly flat agricultural land.

History

Makubetsu in Ainu is makuunbetsu which means river near the mountains. The present Makubetsu dates from 2 Feruary 2006 when Churui Village was merged with the previous town of Makubetsu to the north of it.
