Makubetsu
Makubetsu (幕別町 Makubetsu-chō) is a town in Nakagawa District, in the central southern part of Tokachi Subprefecture. It is the home of a form of simplified croquet-style golf called 'park golf'. Invented in 1983, there are ten different courses.
The main JR Nemuro railway line from Obihiro to Kushiro passes through Makubetsu, with stations at Satsunai (札内), Inashibetsu (稲士別) and Makubetsu (幕別).
In 2006, Makubetsu had a population of 27,454. It has a land area of 478 km² mainly flat agricultural land.

History
Makubetsu in Ainu is makuunbetsu which means river near the mountains. The present Makubetsu dates from 2 Feruary 2006 when Churui Village was merged with the previous town of Makubetsu to the north of it.

- Churui Muesum of Naumann's Elephant Shiraganemachi 383-1, Churui tel 0155 88 2826. Museum of the 1970 excavation of a 120,000 year-old Naumann's elephant. No English in displays, but the museum has a good leaflet in English by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).
- Makubetsu Ezo Culture and Archaeology Museum Senju 114-1 tel 0155 56 4899. Open 10.00-16.00 Closed Tuesdays (or the next day if Tuesday is a holiday). Ainu artifacts etc.
- Shinichi Takeda Memorial Gallery tel 0155 56 4050. Paintings of owls.

One ski lift, two slopes of 500 and 800 metres (advanced/beginner and intermediate). Payment by time or lift use: 2,000 yen for 13 individual lift rides (kaisuken). Night illumination. Shop, canteen, ski and snowboard rental. Five ski lodges available, each accommodating up to 10 people. Located off Route 236.
