Getting started
Welcome to the Mountains Project! If you are new to Hokkaipedia, the first thing to do is to join. See Hokkaipedia Quick Start. Also please sign on to the project (above). There is also a project discussion page.
Articles
These articles have already been created:
- Mountains: Mount Hokkai, Mount Keigetsu, Mount Kuro, Mount Poroshiri, Mount Tottabetsu, Mount Tsurugi
- Mountain ranges: Daisetsuzan Mountains, Hidaka Mountains
- National parks: Daisetsuzan National Park, Hidaka Sanmyaku-Erimo Quasi-National Park
Sections
Articles on mountains include sections on hillwalks, access to trailheads, mountain huts and camping sites, and other features that are unique to the mountain. Those on mountain ranges generally contain sections on the general environment, flora and fauna, geology etc. while those on the national parks are more about administrative arrangements and park facilities. In practice there will often be overlaps in the coverage - this is not a problem as such.
Examples:
- Mountain: Mount Tsurugi
- Mountain range: Daisetsuzan Mountains
- National park: Daisetsuzan National Park
Maps
We use the Google Maps extension and also reference online (and print) contour maps by Kokuto Chiriin and commercial publishers.
Photographs
Good quality images taken in good light are much appreciated. Whenever possible please give the time of year when the picture was taken.
Guidelines
References
Until now the main English reference for walkers has been the Lonely Planet Hiking in Japan by Florence, M et al. (2001). This should be credited as appropriate.
There are also a number of academic studies of Hokkaido mountains available in English and on the net. As far as possible these should be listed at the foot of articles. (Japanese references can also be included.)
Lists
Lists of mountains are alphabetical unless specifically arranged in another way, e.g. by direction or by height etc.
Categories
Mountains are a subcategory of Places. Categories are also being set up for flora and fauna etc.
Stubs
Hokkaipedia is developed from red links to stubs and then to full articles, so creating stubs is a stage in that process. (It is helpful if the stubs include sufficient information to be viable in their own right, e.g. an mountain stub should at least include location, map details and height.)
