Hidaka

Hidaka (日高町 Hidaka-chō) is a town in Saru District in Hidaka Subprefecture. It is unusual in being separated into two distinct areas, north and south of Biratori Town which forms the other part of the district.

In 2007, Hidaka had a population of 14,268. The number of foreigners living in Hidaka is also published on the town website: 80 in 2007. It has a land area of 993 km², of which the northern section (formerly Hidaka) is 564 km² and the southern section (formerly Monbetsu) is 429 km².

History

The present Hidaka was formed in 2006 when Monbetsu Town (門別町 Monbetsu-chō) was merged with (the former) Hidaka township.

Communications

The JR Hidaka railway line passes through the southern section of Hidaka, with stations at Tomikawa (富川), Hidaka-mombetsu (日高門別), Toyosato (豊郷), Kiyohata (清畠), and Atsuga (厚賀).

The northern section enjoys good road connections. Linked to the south by Route 237, Hidaka is on the crossroads to three of the major cities of Hokkaidō: Obihiro and Sapporo (east and west on Route 274), and Asahikawa (Route 237).
